The interior of the newly revamped Lock Keeper pub by the side of the Shropshire Union Canal in Chester (Image: Cheshire Live)īuilding on the canal began in 1772, with The Cow Lane Bridge running over the canal having been used to drive cattle from grazing land outside the city walls into the city for safety at night. The site has a fascinating heritage, with a plaque just down from the pub detailing what was there during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, including the former salt store, known as the Cow Lane Bridge Timber Yard and Salt Store around 1900. The pub is part of Chester's industrial heritage, having been used to store salt from Northwich, along with wood and other goods brought to the city on narrow boats. There's also a terraced area for those popping in for a drink or a light bite, with repurposed whiskey barrels and bar stools. Their aim is to create a country pub vibe in the heart of the city, with different areas including an indoor and outdoor dining area, along with a VIP dining terrace and a dedicated space for families looking to enjoy a meal. The revamp is the work of Chester-based business partners, Stuart Hope and Simon Burgess, who are working alongside hospitality consultant Gary O'Reilly to breathe new life into the pub. Visitors to the newly refurbished Lock Keeper pub can enjoy a pint or a bite to eat while watching narrow boats float by. An historic Chester pub is preparing to relaunch following a £130,000 revamp, which includes the building of a large canalside terrace.
